Facebook Discussion:

Just posted this on facebook. Would like to know your thoughts too. (More details on the house in a comment over on facebook.)

"What would you do? Buy your dream house but have to live frugally for several years, or buy something smaller and have more liquid funds. I seriously want to hear your thoughts. Cause we have to decide by tomorrow."

Leave a comment here or on facebook. Either way I need some advice.

In this economy, peace of mind is nicer than a big house. :) But it is tempting to have a dream home! We like Dave Ramsey and he has good advice about when you're ready to buy a home on his website.

I read your comment on facebook and I would say if you are still able to save a little bit of money as well (just in case) I would go for the dream house. Furniture and decorating can always be done later.

I would go smaller and have more money! I know from experience, we bought a fatty house and then had trouble doing all the decorating I wanted due to lack of funds. It's no fun being house poor.

I would go smaller and have more money. I love our house but we have been in it for four years and it is still minimally decorated, slowly being painted, and the yard is terrible because we don't want to go into debt for a fence and great landscaping.
I wish a lot that we had rented or something so that we could be doing more of the things we want to do and not have the stress of a tighter budget.

I forgot to mention that we are hoping to move back closer to our family eventually so we don't see ourselves here forever and that may be part of the problem.
If your dream home is one that you think you will grow old in and be in forever, then it may be worth it to live tightly for awhile.

Having just bought our house in Dec. we have now put at least 15k into updates/remodels and need to now buy a bigger truck and a tractor. My decision is to go for the cheaper. Evidenced by your blog and desire to have more children, you don't really want to live strapped just b/c of your house do you? You just never know what tomorrow will bring either. Biblically be a good steward of your $ and God will help you decide.

If you are planning to be there for life, then I would go for the dream house. If you do not want to stay there long-term, I'd go with a moderate house. We faced the same dilemma a few years ago and realized it would be silly to have our nice new house and not be able to entertain in it because we couldn't furnish it (that is unless we wanted to stop contributing to our children's college fund...) Good luck on whatever you decide!

I bought a house that was as big as we could afford because we loved the property. Now 4 years later, I hate that I have NO free money to do anything because we have a huge mortgage. I didn't listen to Dave Ramsey- and I really wish I would've!!!

I dream about having a smaller house and saving money to buy a bigger one with more money down.
