Our Thanksgiving

When I realized it would be just the three of us this Thanksgiving, my first thought was to go out to Mexican food and call it good. Somehow we switched gears a bit and ended up making the entire Thanksgiving dinner from scratch. Shane even brined and smoked the turkey. I made my first pumpkin pie. It wasn't until I already had the dough rolled out that I remembered I didn't own a pie tin. Thus, a cake pan was used. Worked great!

Shane and I spent most of Wednesday cooking together while Lydia danced around to the Christmas music we were playing. Of course, she wasn't always a perfect angel while we were distracted in the kitchen. Check out the video for details.
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

A Twilight Birthday

What do you do when your friend has a 30th birthday the week of Thanksgiving, but the weekend before, everyone is going to see Twilight? Duh, you throw her a Twilight themed party! We all went out to dinner and gorged on chocolate cake. (I don't think I was clear enough with the bakery when I told them I wanted the chocolate frosting dyed black.) Then those of us up to a late night went to see Twilight. I thought it was really good! That first kiss was way better than in the book. Yummy. Hopefully next time they will have a bigger budget to improve on the special effects. Note to my mom and sisters: let's all go see it again for Christmas and let the guys stay home and watch football. :)

Happy 30th Birthday Wendy!

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming....

Well, I think that the Fall Giveaway Soiree was a success. Thank you to all of the sponsors who helped put it together. I will still be doing giveaways, just not 3 days a week. I need a break! If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for a giveaway, email me at and we can discuss details. (Don't forget, you still have this week to enter last weeks giveaways!)

Now I am off to my next project....Handcrafted Holidays Art & Craft show! My friend Kristi and I decided that we wanted a craft show that wasn't so....crafty. We wanted something a little more sophisticated and chic. Handmade is all the rage, and almost everyone we know makes something amazing. So why not have a little party and showcase it all?

If you are going to be in the Chattanooga area the first weekend of December, please drop by. There will be over 20 vendors showing their wares. We are holding the event in the most beautiful home at 9400 Magical View Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421. That is in the Mountain Shadows Subdivision. Friday December 5th from 4-9 and Saturday from 9-4.

If you live in the Chattanooga area, make sure also to register to win one of our Handcrafted Holidays gift Baskets. See you there!

Winner!

The winner of the Paisley Lane earrings is ....ME! I died laughing when the random generator picked the comment that I made in response to a nice compliment someone paid me. I am awarding the prize to the person who would have won, had I not made that comment. Congrats to Are You Serious! Email me your address and I will get those earrings out to you.

The Broccoli Wars

Lydia is not a fan of raw broccoli. She pretends to be, then when I am not looking she spits the chewed up bits on the floor- I enter my lovely photo as proof. I just love cleaning that grossness. Cooked broccoli is a little bit better, but last night she was having nothing to do with it. Just in random ramble I told her than it would make her tummy feel good because eating broccoli will make her toot. She looked very intrigued by this. "Yes Lydia. These are little Tooty Trees. They make you toot." She loved that. Today at lunch she even asked for tooty trees. Of course, maybe if I got this brand of broccoli I wouldn't have to try so hard....

A new dessert for the day of thanks?

I want to make something in addition to pumpkin pie this year. Indian Pudding with Figs is topping my list so far. Thanks Saltbox House Cooking Exchange. You are my go-to cooking link.

One Week til Thanksgiving....

This Thanksgiving I've decided I want to try a few new dishes. I am still deciding what to do for rolls. (I will have to make some Rhodes rolls for Shane, but personally I think they are a little "yawn" for Thanksgiving.) I mentioned cornbread, but he thought that was crazy. Of course, he has no say, since I am still making him his rolls of choice.

I am thinking of trying this stuffing recipe from Paula Dean. I am not a huge Paula fan (don't hate me, I just prefer Ina) - but this looks pretty good.
(Though I will pass on her suggestion to serve it with Mushroom Giblet Gravy. Gross.)

A Good Day

I have no idea where my journal is, but I have to make note of the great day I had today.
  • It is freezing outside. Which I will admit made our visit to the park a little rushed, but it got me into the holiday spirit pretty fast. Lydia is loving the Christmas music I have been playing in the car which is a fantastic respite from the Wee Sing Silly Songs we usually listen to. Also - my Starbucks Hot Cocoa warmed me right up.
  • Lydia didn't fall asleep for an hour after I put her down for a nap. She played in bed with her stuffed animal. When she did fall asleep, the nap lasted for 3 hours. That gave me 4 hours of alone time this afternoon. 4 hours!
  • When Shane came home he surprised me with the cutest Christmas dish towels from Target along with a gorgeous card. Just because. (I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I thought we needed more romance in our day-to-day routine. Look who is listening....)
  • Went out to dinner with girlfriends. Talked about....... well, the stuff that 6 women talk about when they have a night away from their families :)
  • Went shopping at the mall. Alone. Checked 3 people off my Christmas list. Got great deals. (Like this sweater for Shane on an incredible sale. Gave it to him early. Just because.)
  • Came home to a clean kitchen and a warm little toddler who wanted to get out of bed to be "rocked like a baby". Gladly.

Now off to bed an hour earlier than normal. Yes. This was a very good day.

What we need this week....

At breakfast yesterday I was making a list of meals I wanted to make for the week and the food I would need.

Lydia asked "Are you writing food?"

"Yes, is there anything you want?"

"We need chicken."

We did indeed need chicken so I wrote it down and glanced back at Lydia for her next suggestion. This is the list she gave me:

Chicken
Bananas
Grapes
Popsicles
Apples
Lemons
Candy
Mac & Cheese
Water
Rolls
Raisins
Flowers
Plates
Sweaters
Bowls
Soap
Chandeliers
Pillows
Napkins
Sausage
Phones

Simplify

I mentioned in an earlier post that Shane's company sends me flowers whenever he completes a project. These were delivered the other day, and while they were beautiful they were just too....cluttered. I let the florist in me take over, grabbed my floral sheers and started trimming.

Better no?

Now if I could only apply the same principle to my master closet.....

Best of Chattanooga - Christmas Gift

A couple months ago, Shane and I were looking for a house warming gift for a local friend of ours. This friend knows everything there is to know about Chattanooga, so we ended up getting him the book Historic Photos of Chattanooga by William F. Hull. I didn't think much about it until we looked through it a bit before we wrapped it. Shane and I were both mesmerized. Shane loved seeing the progression of architecture through the years. I loved the photos of the people frequenting the same places I frequent - only 100 years earlier.

This would be a beautiful gift to give anyone who loves this area and would be interested in its history.
Turner Publishing has given me a copy of this book to giveaway to one of my readers. If you are interested, email me at nataliessentiments@gmail.com I will contact the winner next week.

Men on the Big Screen

I know that I just did my share of ripping on Hollywood. But I would like to personally send my thanks for bringing the "real man" back to the screen. Thank you to Christian Bale for reminding us that Batman can be cool. (And may I say - he will be the perfect John Connor.) Thank you to Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man for showing us what the over-indulged ladies man is supposed to be like. (Sexy and genuinely funny) And most importantly, thank you to Daniel Craig for being the best Bond. Ever. If I can't find a babysitter for this weekend, I may just have to go to Quantum of Solace by myself.

11/14 11pm UPDATE - Quantum of Solace was awesome. Daniel Craig is perfection. Can someone tell me where he gets his suits? I need one for Shane.

I have had a link to studio jk vinyl on my sidebar since I knew what a sidebar was. One of their vinyls grace the wall above my bed. When Grandma comes to visit.....

Before Shane and I got married, we decided that we wanted to spend (at least) the first 10 years of marriage living away from family. We thought that this would be a good way to build a foundation as a couple, to maintain our independence and to learn to work through difficult situations on our own. - Can you tell that we are both the oldest children of our family? :) As such, we have never lived closer than a 9 hour drive to any family.

This was all fine and good for the first 5 years of marriage. And then Lydia arrived. I have mentioned it before, but the first 18 months of Lydia's life were hell. I was a walking Zombie. I never slept. I never left the house. I never saw friends. Had I had a blog at that time, I wouldn't have been able to see through the tears to write, nevertheless string together a coherent sentence.

All I lived for at that time were visits from my mom. Or visits to see my parents (though that necessitated a plane trip with a baby who screamed CONSTANTLY for 12 hours, so that part wasn't so much of a delight). I don't think I have wanted my "mommy" that badly since I was a toddler.

Life isn't so dire anymore, but visits from my mom are just as wonderful. Now she isn't saving me from the mental institution, she is helping me out and getting to enjoy Lydia at this sweet age. And of course - spoiling Lydia. One of her first days in town we had a Lydia Day that only a Grandma could provide. We hit Build-a-Bear for the first time and I watched as Lydia and my mom carefully choose every accessories down to the red panties. (Lydia named her new friend "Kasey". I have no idea how she even knows that is a name.) Next we went out to lunch and got malts!!!!! - Why the excitement? We just got a Red Robin and found out it is peanut free! This is the first time we have ever been able to take Lydia out for a real ice cream treat.

After all three of us took naps - we strolled the park. We searched for squirrels and snapping turtles and the prettiest fall leaves we could find. - Did you know that you can preserve leaves by microwaving them? Works pretty well. After Lydia went to bed for the night, my mom and I made Ina Garten's Apple Crisp as a little fall treat. It may be my new fall favorite. The entire house was filled with its scent. It was so good we were actually giggling while we ate it.

Well, my mom had to go home, but I am still amazingly refreshed from her visit. Which is good, because Lydia has thrown about 19 insane temper tantrums today and I think that Shane is going to have to work late again. Whatever. I am going to go snack on some leftover apple crisp.

Love you mom!

P.S. I forgot to mention that Shane and I took advantage of our visiting babysitter to venture on a little 24 hour vacation. We stayed the night at the downtown Hilton, ate room service in bed, slept in late, got up to eat at the fantastic breakfast buffet - then back to our room to take a nap. (Always request a late check out when on a romantic night away.) Pretty perfect by my accord.

Mighty Leaf Tea Giveaway

This Giveaway has closed.
Finally it is getting cold and cozy down here in Tennessee. (See my previous post for some photos.) That for me means fuzzy socks, baked apples and ....herbal tea. I am a huge herbal tea drinker, especially since I discovered Mighty Leaf Tea. I mentioned it for the first time in my Best of 2007 post. I now that I have been drinking it regularly, I am even more of a fan. It is a great change from boring supermarket herbal teas.

Mighty Leaf is going to send one of you their herbal infusions sampler packaged in a decorative tin. Filled with 30 biodegradable Tea Pouches of the following flavors: Chamomile Citrus, African Nectar, Ginger Twist, Organic Mint Mélange and Rainforest Maté. (Note - The Rainforest Maté is made with a hint of black tea, so if you don't drink regular tea (like me) you may want to pass on this flavor.)

Contest Rules:

1. Go to Mighty Leaf Tea
and let me know in a comment on this post what tea/product looks the most tempting to you. Deadline Sunday, November 16th.

2. For a extra entry, let me know in a separate comment that you are a subscriber or follower (see right hand sidebar) of Natalie's Sentiments.

3. For a third entry, let me know in a separate comment that you have blogged about my Fall Giveaway Soiree and that you have the icon on your side bar.

Winner will be announced Monday November 17th. Good Luck!

Get up and dance with your kids to this. You know Lydia and I are kicking it.

Worst Movies Ever

In college I took a course on Film criticism. The first day in class the professor warned us that we would never really be able to enjoy movies the same way again. He said that we would analyze every detail and only the really fantastic movies would meet our standard. To me that sounded a lot like being an extreme snob and I didn't want to be included in that club. My Netflix account is a cornucopia (it's November. I have to use that word) of classics, blockbusters and random feel good movies like 27 Dresses and About a Boy. I like a lot of movies. In the same token, I will admit there are some movies that are really bad. (Anyone get through Leatherheads? I only made it an hour in before I shut it off.)

I have complied a list of my 5 worst movies of all time. It was surprisingly easier than making a list of my favorites. (That list is still in the works.) I know if I went to the video store and walked around, I would probably find some more sucky gems to add to the list, but these are the ones that really stand out.

5. Bed of Roses - I will quote Shane on this one. (He has never seen the movie.) "Natalie. The name of the movie is BED OF ROSES. Exactly how good could it be?"

4. HellBoy- I have strange respect for this movie. Yes, it sucked. Really really blew. But Shane was the person who decided that we would see this movie - and pay full price for it in the theater. Now occasionally, when we are having a disagreement, I call him Hellboy to remind him that his judgement cannot always be trusted. It has won me several arguments.

3. Batman and Robin - Arnold Schwarzenegger dressed as the iceman growling "Chill, chill, chill" still haunts me as one of the lamest cinematic moments ever.

2. Autumn in New York - Jerky older man in love with a younger sweet thing who is dieing of a heart disease. The entire movie I prayed she would just have a heart attack and put the audience out of our misery. Oh Winona. I will always love you after Reality Bites, but this movie (and the shoplifting) killed your carrier.

1. Down to You - I will just say it. WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. It is almost genius in its stupidity. The writing is abysmal. The storyline cannot be followed. The acting. Oh the acting! Freddy Prince has played the same unlikable character in all of his movies. But this was a real low point for Julie Stiles. And that is saying a lot coming from me. Julie Stiles is my least favorite actress.

I can't say it any better than this:

"Flees from anything that might involve real human emotion, or for that matter any credible human activity other than looking good. "
A.O. Scott
New York Times
-
"The script, which simply doesn't work at all, and reduces the characters to lumpen, uninteresting blobs" Rich Cline Shadows on the Wall
-
"The race for the year's worst film has begun". Erik Childress eFilmCritic.com

Now I want to know some of your least favorite movies.......

VOTE!

I don't discuss politics anymore. The first two years of college, that is all I discussed. I even had a stint as a Political Science major. Once a guy from one of my political science classes asked me out for a date, well, what I thought was a date. He actually wanted to get me one-on-one to hash out some of our differing options on Immigration. It was a blast :)

Anywho, I don't talk politics anymore. I tend to get heated. That is why I have kept my political opinions off this blog. All I am going to say is that I am voting republican. I hope you do too. If not... we can still be friends.

WINNER!!!
