Happy May Day - flowers and dessert for mom

The other day I found myself alone. This never happens. Lydia and Shane were working in the yard, Collin was sleeping. I decided to do a little baking. While cooking feels like it is part of my "job" since I am forced to do it everyday, baking is still recreational.  In fact, I'm counting this as my time to myself for the weekend. While looking through cookbooks for inspiration, I glanced outside and saw wild violets in the yard. I thought it was such a shame they would soon be mowed up. Then I remembered that Ina Garten uses violets on her desserts. They're edible you know.

I made my favorite white cake from my (very neglected) recipe blog. Then I made a basic buttercream icing with extra milk. I wanted it to drip down and give a smooth, yet homemade look. You could do this with fondant, but buttercream is so much yummier. How could it not be? Just say it Buttercream. Scrumptious.

Then top with some gently washed violets...or your mom's favorite flower. Beautiful!
I wish I could be with my mom this Mother's day. I would love to make these for her.

What are you doing this Mother's Day?

(Mom, I'll make you a batch of cupcakes next time I see you. Promise.)

I must be looking over your button for your recipe blog. NieNie used to have one and it's gone private and it's so sad because she had the best fresh recipes. Mother's Day, staying home and praying that it won't be treated like a regular Sunday where I get the kids ready for church and the hubster takes a nap and wakes up right before we have to rush and our block is at 1pm and we're still late...I'm not bitter. (I had to delete the firtst post, I wouldn't be able to sleep at night with that many typo-s)
